One of the biggest conferences for writers is having its closing ceremony today — The Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators 39th Annual Summer Conference.
I’ve been trying to follow the Official SCBWI Conference blog between assembling bookcases and rearranging office furniture but I’m sure I’ll catch up later this week.
I’ve only been to this conference once and to say that it was a LOT of information is an understatement. I think my mind buzzed for a few days afterward.
This was one of my first writing conferences and I met a lot of writer friends that I still keep in contact.
What I loved about this conference is that everyone there had one thing in common: a passion for writing and illustrating for kids and teens.
Traveling from Atlanta made the trip expensive but I’m glad that I got a chance to go.
So I must say I have a teeny bit of conference envy for everyone that went to LA this weekend. Ha.
I hope to go to at least three more conferences this year. I’ve got my eye on the Big Sur Children’s Writing Workshop in December and two more regional conferences.
Do any of you plan on going to any more writing conferences this year? Do you go to meet other writers? Learn about craft? Or do you go to find an agent or a editor that may have interest in your work?
Conference Envy

I would love to go to a conference sometime, but the distance I’d have to travel makes it next to impossible at this time. Hopefully one of these days I can make one. There’s so much to see, hear and learn.
i’m thinking about going to the regional SCWBI in september in Nashville, TN, but want to look at the Big Sur conference you linked to. thanks for sharing. i had no idea about it.
Jemi: I’ve only been able to attend conferences in the last two years. It’s so expensive if you have to travel. It’s worth it though when you do get a chance.
Rebecca: Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
I’ve never been to the Mid-South conference but I hear it’s really great. I’ll have to make a trip soon. I’ve heard some really good things about Big Sur. I think they should be opening it up for conference registration soon.
I’m hoping to get too some. I will go to my local SCBWI
and hope to get to one more. I’ve got to keep searching for that money tree. It’s gotta be around here somewhere!!
Jeannine: Ha, when you find that money tree, you be sure to let me know! :)
Hopefully in September, we may hear some good news about Rutgers.
I would love to attend a few more conferences this year but I’m not able to. I attended the NYC Pitch conference and had a great time and got my manuscript into the hands of an editor. My fingers are still crossed on that one!
Next year I might attend the SCBWI but my main focus is going to be the Pen To Press writers retreat in New Orleans. I can’t wait to hear how the Big Sur is, I hope you tell us all about it!
Heather: Good luck with the editor. That NYC Pitch conference sounded like it was a good one. And the Pen to Press writers retreat in New Orleans? Wow, sounds great too.
Big Sur registration has opened up so I’m planning on trying to get a spot. If I get in, I’ll be sure to share all the details!
