Things are little crazy at the day job (as usual these days). So I thought it was time to share another Flashback Friday.
Since I write for teens, I thought it would be fun to revisit my own years during that time. I’ve kept most everything from my high school years — some of it fun while others — let’s just say I’m so glad that part of my life is over.
This installment is another note from a boy — it looks like I saved every letter I ever got — I have tons of them. Anyway, here’s one that I remember because it was an awkward situation. A good friend now wants more than a platonic relationship:
Dear Karen:
It wasn’t too fun in math was it? I’ll be glad when we go back to page 300. What did you make on your test? I made a (91). I missed three!
You’re probably wondering why I’m writing this letter when I can just talk to you. The thing is there is something on my mind. So here it is.
I’ve been wanting to tell you how much I like you. I wanted to ask you to go to homecoming with me but I was afraid you might say no right away and you went with that (omitted bad, bad word) Melborris. But now I realize that I can still ask you to other places.
Please know that I value our friendship. But I can’t stand it anymore.
I know this is out of the blue. But think about it.
P.S. Don’t let ANYONE see this note. Please let it be between me and you.
I still remember the shock of reading this letter. For me, it really did come out of the blue. I really didn’t see this person more than a friend and it stressed out our friendship. And then I was dating (bad word) Melborris — should have known better with a name like that. LOL. But in the end, we mended our friendship during our senior year.
Teens go through so many emotions during this time. In the novel I’m working on, there is a similar thing going on — how do you get out of the friendship zone? What happens when your attraction is not reciprocated? Does the friendship survive?
Anyway, enough of my high school drama. Hope all of you have a great weekend and welcome Spring with open arms.
Plus get tons of writing done.

High school drama is so intense. Such a wild, emotional ride.
Have a great weekend :)
That was so funny and cute. I think it’s extremely hard for a friendship to last after one person has exposed their feelings and it’s not recriprocated, b/c that can be really awkward. good tension for a story though. :)
I love the high school note–so funny! I saved a ton of stuff from high school as well. I may have to go digging and see what I can find . . . Thanks for sharing.
Jemi: When you’re a teen it IS intense. Every drama seems like the end of the world.
Laura: It was a whole year before our relationship got back to where it was. I’m trying to mine those memories for the novel.
Aimee: Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I saw this person at my high school reunion and we can laugh about it now. ;)
Ha ha, I had a similar thing happen to me and I remember how it seemed like it was such a life or death situation. In high school there is always so much drama. It’s crazy how a little perspective can do so much. :)
Sorry Firefox is giving you so many troubles today, I can totally sympathize with blog issues. I’m going through a revamp right now and it feels like everything’s a mess. Ugh. Good thing I work for an Internet company, otherwise I’d be totally lost with things like “redirect” and other issues.
I remember something similar in high school except I got a note from a guy I didn’t even know. He slipped the letter into my locker and revealed he had a secret crush on me. I had no clue who he even was. Some of my friends asked around and found out his identity. He asked me to go with him to our Junior prom. I felt bad but declined. We never spoke again after that. Now that I look back, I probably hurt his feelings. Glad those days are over.
Have a nice weekend!
Tiana: High school drama is like life or death. I look back on it now and say “It wasn’t THAT serious.” But back then…SERIOUS. Ha.
I figured out my Firefox 3.6 problem. My blog uses an old free theme which I’ve hacked so every time a browser updates, it breaks. I may need to go trolling for another free theme to hack. :)
Melissa: Wow, you didn’t even know him? He loved you from a far. :) That had to be very awkward for you at the time. It’s hard when someone has feelings for you and you don’t have feelings for them. Even worse in high school. Not fun.
