Jemi: That's interesting how different writers work. I have to have the plot first before character. We all have to find what works best for us.

Good advice! For me the characters are the centre of the story - it all revolves about them, so I've got to know them really well. I tend to let them walk around in my head for a bit before I start writing so I know them :)

Anna: I've never heard of the Proust questionnaire, but I looked it up and having a character answer some of the questions could be VERY helpful. Thanks for sharing!

Laura: Internal stuff for characters make them much stronger. Quirks are good but only if they form organically -- not just stuck in the novel as an after-thought.

Thanks for sharing Karen. I agree that well-developed characters take time. And getting the internal stuff down is more important than the quirky stuff.

Great list, Karen! I've been struggling to figure out one of my characters recently. I'll keep these questions in mind. Also, I read a really helpful tip that said to use the Proust questionnaire by having your characters answer the questions. I did it the other day and it was SO helpful.
