I have to admit, I’m a novel chick and I didn’t read a lot of short stories. That changed somewhat when I was in the graduate writing program at Kennesaw State University. I had an intense love affair with the short story and even wrote some of my own. Unlike novels, which have room to grow and explore, short stories have to be focused and tight.

There is one particular anthology that I’ve read several times, and I always found more meaning in the stories with each visit.

Drinking Coffee Elsewhere by ZZ Packer.

This anthology focuses on different characters who must face decisions or deal with consequences (something I find very intriguing). The short story that stands out most for me is “Brownies” — which focuses on Snot, a young black girl who is caught up in a revenge plot with her troop mates against a troop of white girls who may or may not have uttered a racial epithet.

The result of this standoff is something that gives the reader a lot to think about. The underlying effects of separation and racism — and its resulting effect of the generalizations of people.

Every time I read this particular story, it makes me think of my own background and exposure and the impact it has on how I see the world and other people.

If you get a chance, you can check out ZZ Packer at Story Hour at UC Berkeley reading this short story.
